US Business Phone Number + AI Virtual Receptionist
To get a US business phone number with an AI receptionist, sign up for Talksy, open your assistant's Channels tab, search US local numbers, and buy one. US numbers need no paperwork, so it's active immediately, included in your plan, and answered by your AI assistant from the first ring. The whole process takes a few minutes and doesn't require an account with a phone company.
This page covers the US-specific details: how numbers work, local versus toll-free, keeping your existing number, consent rules, and what it costs.
How do I get a US number in Talksy?
- Sign up. The free trial lasts 14 days and doesn't need a card. It includes one phone number.
- Create an assistant. Write its instructions: your business name, hours, services, prices you're willing to quote, and what to tell callers who need a person. On phone calls, the assistant answers from these instructions.
- Open Channels and add Voice. Choose "Buy Number", leave the country as United States, and search.
- Pick a number from the list. Each result shows the region it belongs to. Buy it.
- Call it. The assistant greets the caller, answers, and ends the call politely when they're done.
There's no porting form, no letter of authorization and no carrier contract. Behind the scenes, numbers are provisioned through Talksy's telecom carrier, Telnyx, but you never deal with them directly.
Local number or toll-free?
The FCC explains that toll-free numbers use the prefixes 800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844 or 833, and the caller isn't charged for the call. They suit national brands. Local numbers suit businesses that serve a city or region, because a familiar area code signals that you're nearby.
Talksy offers local numbers only. For most of the small businesses we build for (contractors, clinics, salons, restaurants, local law firms), that's the number customers expect to see anyway.
A detail worth knowing: many US regions now have more than one area code covering the same area. California's regulator describes an overlay as adding a second area code to the same geographic region, which also means callers dial 1 plus the area code for local calls. If your city has an overlay, a number in either code is equally local.
Can I keep my existing number?
Yes. Most businesses keep their current number and forward it. Every major US carrier and VoIP provider lets you forward calls:
- All calls to the Talksy number, if you want the AI to answer everything.
- When busy or unanswered, so the AI only picks up when you can't.
- On a schedule, if your phone system supports time-of-day routing, so the AI covers nights and weekends.
Talksy doesn't port numbers today, so forwarding is the way to put an AI receptionist behind a number you already advertise. You can also print the Talksy number directly on new signage, vans or ads.
What US rules apply to an AI answering my calls?
Three areas to know about. None of this is legal advice.
Call consent. Federal law allows a call to be recorded with one party's consent, but about 11 states generally require everyone's consent, according to the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press: California, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Washington. Talksy doesn't save call audio, but speech is transcribed by software in real time so the AI can answer. Saying "you've reached the automated assistant for…" at the start of every call is the simple, defensible default, and it's what we recommend everywhere.
Outbound calls and the TCPA. In February 2024 the FCC ruled unanimously that AI-generated voices count as "artificial" under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, so AI-voiced outbound calls generally need the recipient's prior consent. Talksy answers inbound calls only and doesn't place outbound calls, but keep the ruling in mind if you run campaigns with other tools.
Industry rules. Healthcare providers should know that Talksy is not a HIPAA-compliant service; see the dentists page for how practices configure it to stay general. Law firms have confidentiality duties covered on the law firms page.
What languages can the receptionist speak?
Each assistant is set to one language. English and Spanish are both options, along with French, German, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Hindi, Arabic and others. Businesses that serve English and Spanish speakers often run two assistants on two numbers and publish both; the Growth plan includes three assistants and two numbers.
What does it cost in the US?
Prices are in US dollars, billed monthly, with no overage charges. When you reach a plan's limit, the assistant pauses until the next cycle instead of running up a bill.
| Starter | Growth | Scale | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $19/mo | $49/mo | $149/mo |
| Local US or Canadian numbers included | 1 | 2 | 5 |
| Voice minutes | 60 | 300 | 1,000 |
| WhatsApp and Telegram messages | 1,000 | 5,000 | 20,000 |
| Assistants | 1 | 3 | 10 |
For context, the Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the 2025 median pay for US receptionists at $18.27 an hour. An AI receptionist doesn't replace a good front-desk person, but it covers the hours nobody is there. Our AI receptionist cost guide compares it with staffed answering services, and the full plan details are on pricing.
Who uses it?
There are about 36.2 million small businesses in the US, according to the SBA Office of Advocacy, and the ones that benefit most are those whose owners are on job sites, with patients or with clients when the phone rings. We've written specific setup guides for plumbers, HVAC companies, dentists, law firms, real estate agents, salons and spas, restaurants and property managers.
What the US number doesn't do
It's a voice line answered by your AI assistant. It doesn't send or receive SMS, it can't transfer a call to your cell, and calls aren't recorded. Your WhatsApp Business number is connected separately (see the WhatsApp setup guide). Serving customers north of the border too? Canadian numbers work the same way: see Canada.
