AI Receptionist and Business Phone Number in the UK

Why can't I buy a UK number instantly?
Because the UK, like most countries outside North America, regulates who may hold a local number. Talksy provisions numbers through its carrier, Telnyx, and Telnyx won't complete a UK order until the required documents (typically proof of address) have been submitted and approved.
Here's what you'll see in the dashboard: search United Kingdom numbers in your assistant's Channels tab, and each available number is marked Documents required, with the list of documents the carrier asks for. Those numbers can't be bought until the paperwork is approved. US and Canadian numbers are different: no documents, bought and live in minutes.

What works for a UK business on day one?
WhatsApp. For many UK customers, WhatsApp is already how they contact a local business. Talksy connects to your own WhatsApp Business number through Meta's Cloud API; you paste two values from your Meta app and Talksy configures the rest. The step-by-step WhatsApp guide covers it. Meta bills WhatsApp messages to your own Meta account at Meta's rates; since 1 October 2026, each business number gets 1,000 free service messages a month, with charges after that.
Telegram. Create a bot with BotFather, paste its token into Talksy, and you're live.
On both channels, the assistant searches documents you upload (PDF, CSV or TXT, up to 10 MB each): price lists, opening hours, service menus, policies. Every conversation is saved and searchable in your dashboard.
A US or Canadian number, if you also serve North American customers. UK callers would be dialling internationally, so it isn't a substitute for a UK number.
What should you know about UK numbers in general?
UK geographic numbers start with 01 or 02 and are tied to an area, which is why carriers ask where the business is located. Mobile numbers start with 07, and non-geographic numbers such as 03 are used by organisations that want one national number. For a local business, a geographic number in your own area is usually what customers expect.
You don't have to replace the number you already have. Keep it with your current provider and set call forwarding (all calls, when busy, or when unanswered) to your Talksy number once it's active.
Which UK rules apply to an AI assistant?
This is a summary, not legal advice. The ICO's guidance is the place to check your specific situation.
UK GDPR. You're the controller for the personal data your customers share with the assistant, and you need a lawful basis for processing it. The ICO notes that, following the Data (Use and Access) Act, there are now seven lawful bases rather than six; which one fits depends on what you do with the data. Tell people they're talking to an automated assistant, and keep a privacy notice they can find.
Special category data. The ICO lists data concerning health among the special categories that need extra conditions. Clinics, dental practices and salons should instruct the assistant not to ask for health details. Talksy is not designed to process health records.
Marketing calls (PECR). Under PECR you can't make unsolicited live marketing calls to numbers registered with the Telephone Preference Service without specific consent, and automated marketing calls need specific consent as well. Talksy only answers inbound calls and messages, so these rules apply to any outbound marketing you do with other tools, not to the assistant itself.
Call audio. Talksy doesn't save recordings of calls. The caller's speech is transcribed by software in real time so the AI can reply, which is one more reason to say up front that it's automated.
What does Talksy cost in the UK?
Plans are priced in US dollars and billed monthly. There are no overage charges: when a plan's allowance is used up, the assistant pauses until the next billing cycle.

Is anything else UK-specific?
Two small things. Language: assistants can be set to English and several other languages, one per assistant. And spelling: the assistant writes in the style of your instructions, so if you write them in British English, the replies will generally follow.
